About me
I am a small hobby fish breeder in the Northern suburbs of Perth.
For many years I aspired to have my own breeding faculties having worked in the aquarium industry for many years when I was younger, I saw inspiration from breeders at the time with their own setups.
I have kept fish for about 30 years, started with Cichlids, specialized into Lake Victoria and Small Tanganyika cichlids and some Malawi’s. Got a job at a tropical fish store while I was selling fish to them in my late teens to early twenties. Oversaw the importation of fish from all over the world, learned many many lessons about fish keeping from my boss who was a renowned Angel and Discus breeder and many others in the industry.
I enjoy keeping medaka for their low cost and low maintenance. Depending on your setup you may not even require a filter. They fill that itch for line breeding and making better quality strains, much like koi, you can separate pairs and breeding stock to specific parentage. Always striving to make unique or better quality specimens. I was attracted to them because I don’t have to spend a fortune heating and lighting. They can survive in varying temperature arrangements, are very resistant to disease and parasites. I do keep my breeding stock during winter in a heated room, not because they don’t cant survive it, but because if the temp stays above 18c they tend to keep breeding and I just want to have some projects during winter to keep me busy.
I think medaka are a very underrated recreational fish, much so more then fighting fish or goldfish which are very common in the industry and would like to see them more widely accepted in the aquarium trade.
In Japan the raising of rice fish is a very traditional hobby with widespread popularity, I am hoping through the introduction of my breeding and hobby that it gains more popularity here in Australia.
